In a study the physical load of ambulance workers is assessed during loading the stretcher in the vehicle and during raising the stretcher. The overall conclusion is that these activities exceed the generally accepted guidelines for manual handling. Although differences were found between the three in this study incorporated modern, state of the art stretchers, all three resulted in load levels in excess of ergonomic guidelines. Therefore a fundamental reflection is necessary about the way stretchers are loaded in the ambulance vehicle and the way the stretchers are raised.
